What is EPINet? - View Powerpoint Presentation

EPINet™ is a software package that has been specifically created for the purpose of recording and analysing occupational exposures to blood borne viruses. The focus of the software is to monitor sharps injuries, body fluid splashes and the consequences of such exposures. EPINet™ has the capacity to record detailed information about the exposure including the device involved and the procedure and then provide detailed feedback on which areas are at the highest risk from exposures. Subsequently, this information can be used to identify methods for reducing the frequency of occupational exposures to blood borne viruses.

EPINet™ also has the ability to record the follow-up to these exposures. Every exposure will have potentially serious consequences for the individual involved. The extensive recording features of EPINet™ will monitor the results of any tests for HIV, HBV, and HCV and also treatment given. This allows the exposure to be followed through to its conclusion.

Where does EPINet™ come from?

EPINet™ was conceived over a decade ago at the International Healthcare Worker Safety Center, University of Virginia. Since its conception, EPINet™ has undergone a series of developments and was central in the passing of federal legislation making the use of safety-engineered devices mandatory in the US.

In recent years the work of Dr. Janine Jagger has seen the creation of the version adapted for and now available in the UK: UK Access EPINet™ Version 1.3.

How does EPINet™ work?

EPINet™ is an uncomplicated program that requires minimal hardware and computer knowledge. As EPINet™ is a database that runs in MS Access, it's only prerequisite to operate is MS Access 97™ or later that the majority of computers will already have installed. The simplicity of EPINet™ makes it a very user-friendly program allowing training to be provided quickly and easily.

Who uses EPINet™?

Already used in several other European countries EPINet™ is used by many sites in the UK. Commonly Infection Control or Occupational Health departments will operate the software, however this is dependant on the workings of individual hospitals. As EPINet™ is used to monitor occupational exposures to blood and body fluids it would be the department responsible for recording these exposures that would find the software most useful. However once sufficient data is collected there may be other areas in the hospital that find the information useful, for example risk managers and those who deal with health and safety issues.
