The Association of British Healthcare Industries is the lead trade association for the medical systems industry. It has c.200 corporate members whose output is c80% of the industry total. A recent survey indicated that the value of production in the sector is c.£3bn which equates to 0.8% of UK manufacturing output. Approximately 50,000 people are employed directly and indirectly. The association's membership includes six special interest sections and five sector trade associations which in turn have another 400 members.

The ABHI represents its members' interests on a wide range of topics including issues which are only of interest to specific groups within the membership. The needlestick and sharps injury issue is one of these.
